David Goldberg Custom Knife Sole Authorship “Suzumebachi The Hornet” Cocobolo Wood Dagger “Dagger Ijin”

David Goldberg Custom sword "Suzumebachi" Aikuchi . Here is another great piece from sword smith David Goldberg "Kinzan". Classification-fixed blade dagger. . This Aikuchi is named: " Suzumebachi" or in English "The Hornet"

All of Kinzan's works are titled. In Japan, The Hornet symbol is associated with Power,
Perseverance, Ferocity and Discovery. In addition to these symbols it represents speed,
protection, and wrath. Its appearance in dream is usually a sign of new power that has awakened within an individual.

In Japanese art, Hornets showed up in fabric, pottery glaze, and many of the Japanese art forms we see today . . Kinzan made special steel for this blade, it is truly unique. A very unusual steel for a Japanese style knife. He used a Harley Davidson drive chain. This particular drive chain was gifted to him by a grand national champion. It came off of the 1997 grand national championship Harley Davidson from Edmonton Alberta Canada.
The specialized hada (surface grain pattern) is a very unusual look for a Japanese style sword. You can clearly see the different qualities of steel used in the chain. It gives this piece a fierce look and presence.
Smiths throughout recent history have made blades from chain. However, the combination of Kinzans artistry and design, along with a differentially hardened chain Damascus blade make this piece a true collector's item for any Blade enthusiast.

It is a Japanese Aikuchi style Tanto. Aikuchi meaning tanto without guard. The habaki ( blade collar) is crafted from solid sterling silver. The handle and case are made from a kiln dried 30 year old piece of specially selected cocobolo wood, the case is velvet lined. The fittings are carved from fossilized walrus tusk.
The "koiguchi" or mouth of the case has a blond sheep's horn insert to protect the walrus ivory.
The "Menuki" hilt ornaments are Hornets cast in sterling.

The blade design is based on an early "Koto" era Japanese tanto blade geometry. Long and slender for slashing, with a thick spine for piercing. The word Tanto is used to refer to a Japanese sword that is less than 30 centimeters in length. Commonly known as a Japanese fighting knife, or dagger meant for in close defense where a sword could not be used. Such as indoors or where a sword was not allowed to be worn..
This Is considered an "O aikuchi " (meaning large aikuchi) since the blade is nearly 35 centimeters in length. Traditional Japanese blades are measured from the top notch where the habaki is set, to the tip of the blade in a straight line. . Kinzan prefers to adhere to the classical line and geometry of traditional Japanese swords in his work.
The Blade geometry is very important to the feel and balance of any knife. Kinzan uses the traditional thick spine with the "mune" (roof ridge) design just as he does on his swords. Since this blade is Hira Zukuri the Mune (top ridge line) is the thick for piercing strength. The shape of the blades profile is classic to tanto form. The blade has "Niku" (meat or belly in the blade) this is commonly referred to in western terms as "cannel grind" On a true Japanese style blade the geometry goes to a zero edge. This is how the Japanese blade can be strong and stay sharp.
